The Transformation of Czech Pre-November Alternative Rock Music in the 1990s

This study focuses on the key contemporary trends that both positively and negatively influenced the transformation of the alternative rock scene in the 1990s. Particular attention is paid to external factors (e.g. music management, commercionalization), while internal factors (personal development of the participants) are not neglected. By analysing contemporary music magazines, interviews and oral history research (involving music publicists, music industry representatives and musicians), the author traces the influence of these factors on the transformation of the environment under consideration.
Media image of the rock music in the Czechoslovak print media in the period of normalisation

The rigorosum thesis "Media image of the rock music in Czechoslovak print media in the period of normalisation" outlines the basic characteristics and features of the media's coverage of rock music from 1969 to 1989, relating to factors which shaped common music journalism standards both for official publications as well as the unofficial area of 'samizdat' magazine production. The aim of this research focuses on the role of rock music in Czechoslovak sociological and cultural development as well as on the censorship systems that undermined the qualitative values and principles of music journalism as a whole. On one hand, information for this thesis has been gained through oral historical accounts, on the other hand other methodical elements have been utilised to fulfill the defined goals in a more comprehensive way, i.e. by analysing descriptive and comparative perspectives, using samples from relevant periodicals. At the conclusion, the findings are supported by an analysis and interpretation of selected cultural and music events. They are divided according to the type and extent of media coverage received by official and samizdat periodicals.
The Import and Distribution of Gramophone Records under the Normalization in Socialist Czechoslovakia

This work engages in the import and distribution of the audio storages, concretely the gramophone records to Czechoslovakia. A gramophone record - differently to other audio storages like reel-to-reel tape records or later the cassettes - was meanwhile also an artefact that personified an attractive exoticness of the western world and because of its format and graphical elaboration it represented a valuable object of popular culture. The work is based on the assumption that the development of Czechoslovak musical subcultures depended largely on the distribution of gramophone records. That is why author focuses his attention on the unofficial import of the LP records by private persons. The very limited state-controlled import of this product will be also partly taken in account. An important question within this work is the import of the west-made music from other socialist states. In many of those countries licenses of those LPs were released much more often than in CSSR. Compared to the original western LPs it was easier for Czechoslovakian citizens to reach them - because of better possibilities to travel to socialist countries and yet because of a relatively low prices of eastern presses. Patterns of use addictive substances at active musicians in music groups in the Benešovsko

Introduction: Addictive substances among musicians is a common occurrence. However, this phenomenon is mostly described only by the musicians themselves in their autobiographies. There is little professional work to address this phenomenon. There are many factors that affect musicians and lead them to use addictive substances. Even though this phenomenon is so widespread, it is taken for granted and few pay attention to it. Aim: Aim of thesis is to identify and describe patterns of substance use in active musicians in music groups that are based in the Benešov region, but play outside this area too. Methodology Data were collected in the form of a semi-structured interview. A list of music groups was created using the bandzone website. These groups were then found on Facebook to find out their activity. They were also subsequently approached here. 9 researched musicians took part in the research. Responses from the interviews were recorded directly by hand. Overwrite was performed while data was being written. Subsequently, the data were analyzed by elements of grounded theory. Controlling and managing a music production in the period of normalization on the example of rock music and its media portrayal

The thesis "Controlling and managing a music production in the period of normalization on the example of rock music and its media portrayal" describes and analyses the system of controlling and managing Czechoslovak music production in the period of normalization with a particular attention to the mechanisms that deployed socialist ideological and aesthetical standards in the area of rock music. Additionally, this included a prescriptive media coverage highlighting socialist values using coordinated and centralised management through state institutions. The goal of the thesis is then to reveal a modus operandi of communist cultural policy on the examples of media approach to the trials with leading underground music protagonists in 1976 as rock music was a vehicle for expression their dissent attitude toward the system in an artistic way.
Lingua-cultural space of Ukrainian alternative music (music of independent Ukraine)

This thesis is focused mainly on the portrayal of the alternative music in Ukraine, depicting it not only as a fundamental component of the world cultures, just as equal to other influences, as well as identifying its importance as a playing a truly vital part in forming a social conscience of the Ukrainian people. The following set of goal introduces the forecasted solutions of the aforementioned tasks: to introduce general tendencies leading up to the foundation as well as the development of the Ukrainian alternative music as an integral part of the culture of Ukraine; to analyze the lyrics and texts of the rock musicians and their influence on the national language development in Ukraine; to further identify bilingual tendencies, as well as "surzhik" as examples of language developmental movements in the studied texts. The theory section of this thesis aims to describe worldwide cultural tendencies which preceeded the establishment of the Ukrainian alternative music and has shaped its foundations. 60th to 80th years of the Czechoslovak rock music - the period of prosperity and ruin Bakalářská práce Abstract The Bachelor thesis describes the relationship between the communist regime and the domestic rock scene from its beginnings to the fall of the totalitarian regime. It analyzes the processes of the state apparatus against the music community and options as rock musicians in different decades offered for their creation. The paper describes the most famous cases typical for each season - the beginnings of rock and roll in Czechoslovakia, action against long-haired young men, underground and alternative music in the seventies and last but not least, punk, new wave and metal in the eighties. There is also a comparison with the situation in the west of the Czechoslovakian borders that reflect on the factors that led to the establishment clear-cut relationship to rock. Although the Czechoslovakian regime was in its policy towards rock music one of the least tolerant, efforts to contain its popularity has never been completely successful and essentially only deepen the alienation and disgust for the most part of young people against the communist regime.
